The struggle of Assata Shakur (Joanne Chesimard), godmother of late hip-hop rap icon Tupac Shakur (2Pac); continues. Celebrate the Liberation of Assata Shakur, Carry on The Tradition of Resistance and Self-Determination. November 2, 2006 is the 27th anniversary of the liberation of Assata Shakur from Clinton Correctional Facility in New Jersey. It is also the anniversary of the 5,000-strong march on the UN to protest Black Genocide. On the East Coast, the day is known as Black Solidarity Day. One year after Hurricane Katrina, we can state that "Black Genocide" is not a figment of our imagination The liberation of Assata Shakur is not only a victory for our movement but it is a shining example of resistance and self-determination that we need to follow today. Join the Ida B. Wells Institute and others as we remember, honor and celebrate the liberation of Assata Shakur and re-dedicate ourselves to the cause of resistance and self-determination. The Hands Off Assata (HOA) campaign is launching a national mobilization to wish Assata a happy 60th birthday while calling for an immediate end to repressive targeting of Assata, communities of color, poor communities and Cuba. For over twenty years, Assata has been living in exile (in accordance with international law) in Cuba. Yet the U.S. Federal and the State of New Jersey have consistently violated legal protocols, persecuting Assata for her political beliefs, her political work, and the example that she provides to those who believe in everyone's right to struggle for social justice. Thus, we take this time—on her 60th birthday—to wish her the sanctuary and freedom that she deserves. The Hands Off Assata (HOA) campaign are gathering signatures, educating the public, securing support for Assata, as we strengthen a campaign to call forth a pardon—withdrawing all charges and convictions—for Assata Shakur. The Hands Off Assata (HOA) campaign are traveling city-to-city to wish Assata peace, justice, and the freedom she deserves and has fought for so long. A large, beautiful, birthday card, designed by notable artist, John Rozelle, has been created to travel around the country to collect signatures and well-wishes from communities, activists, students, artists, actors, workers, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters… humans who love and will work for freedom.
