Pen Oakland recently announced Huey Foundation Executive Director David Hilliard as this year's non-fiction winner of the Pen Oakland-Josephine Miles National Literary Award honoring excellence in multi-cultural literature, for Hilliard's "Spirit of the Panther" Dr. Huey P. Newton biography. As Chief of Staff of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, David Hilliard was actively involved in every major activity of the best-recognized and most feared international organization of the 1960s and ''70s. Hilliard's 'spirit of the Panther'' is the first authorized biography on the life, legacy, and intellectual history of Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton, and also features a forward from Huey's widow Fredrika Newton. The PEN Oakland Literary Censorship Awards were inaugurated in 1997 to challenge censorship within the literary culture of the United States, including all aspects of the publishing process, as well as considerations of inclusion/exclusion as they pertain to distribution, reviews, library acquisition, and academic conferences.
