Just because Assata Shakur has ties to the late great hip-hop rap icon Tupac Shakur, it seems a lot of rap and hip-hop web site are ‘headlining’ the recent news of the increased bounty placed on her by the government. It is good that the exposure of her struggle is making news but accurate news is important in a case like this. The Open Letter From Assata Shakur which has been posted on many web sites needs a little clarification. This is one of those cases where a site will publish something that they are not familiar with and other sites will copy and paste it and before you know it, it is put out as being received by a certain web site; sent to them by Assata Shakur. Recently Assata Shakur has had a bounty of One Million Dollars put on her, for her return to the U.S.; giving every ‘want a be legalized kidnapper’ an excuse to try to receive ‘blood money’ for her return to the U.S. by any means necessary. To think that Assata Shakur would send a letter to a web site in the middle of all this would show little respect for the intelligence of this woman; and after all she does have a web site where you can find some of her writings and beautiful poems and other information. In reality, the letter that is being circulated as her ‘response’ to the million dollar bounty was written in 1998. Assata Shakur is a popular ‘headline’ grabber now on some internet sites because of her relationship to the late hip-hop rap icon Tupac Shakur. She is the godmother of the late rap icon. Assata Shakurs struggle is not a come and go thing. The struggle that has brought this reward for her started in May of 1973. Many of the sites that are making a headline of her now will not mention her again until the government makes another move on her. Mutulu Shakur, Tupac Shakurs father figure; went thru the same inter net headline grabbing not to long ago. And you hear no more of his struggle and the fact that he is still in a federal prison after being refused parole. And then there is Geronimo Pratt, another relation of Tupac Shakurs. Locked up for 27 years for a crime he did not commit and then freed and paid 4.5 million dollars. In his case it was a blessing that the death penalty was banned at that time. The point is that those who are not really aware of the struggles of these individuals want headlines and do not truly care about the persons struggle.
