The Hip-Hop violinist, Miri Ben-Ari has introduced rap and hip-hop to the beautiful sounds of ‘strings’ in music. That being said the new offering from Vitamin Records, THe String Quartet Tribute to 2Pac, is in homage to the great hip-hop/rap icon Tupac Shakur. This unique album offers a different approach to Tupac's music in a much softer way. |

September 13, 1996 marked the senseless end of young, brilliant and creative life. Born in 1971 to former Black Panthers parents, Tupac Amaru Shakur was named for an Incan Indian revolutionary, whose name meant “Shining Serpent.” Growing up in abject poverty in New York left its mark on Tupac, leaving him with the desire to express himself artistically. It is this unusual blend of arts and street life that makes Tupac such a complex artist and one not to be dismissed as a mere thug. After he and his family moved to Oakland, CA, he keenly felt his fatherlessness, and sought to atone for it by joining a gang and calling himself 2Pac. By the age of 15, Tupac was writing gangster raps, but it wasn’t until the 1992 release of 2Pacalypse Now that critics began to sit up and take notice. His next two releases, 1995’s Me Against the World and 1996’s All Eyes on Me, released by Death Row Records, heralded a new, powerful voice in rap. 2Pac’s eerie juxtaposition of violence and sensitivity showcased his talents as a songwriter, and attracted much attention, both positive and, tragically, negative. Nevertheless, 2Pac lives on as a posthumous anti-hero and perhaps has grown stronger, as his movies and albums continue to be released to greater and greater acclaim.
Vitamin Records offers The String Quartet Tribute to 2Pac in homage to the great icon of hip-hop and rap. The beautiful melodies 2Pac created during his lifetime are delicately infused with classical string arrangements. The proud owner of The String Quartet Tribute to 2Pac can now access 2Pac’s music in a whole new and brilliant way – ever faithful to the original, but with a classical lament on the grievous loss of a paramount artist, actor and musician. |
