Since the early days of recordings, Philadelphia’s music scene can be most accurately depicted with one word; progression. From Billie Holliday’s voice, the innovations of Coltrane and Sun Ra, through the era of Gamble and Huff and Philadelphia Soul, to Schooly D and the origins of Gangsta Rap and most recently the organic sound of The Roots and the Neo-Soul movement.
Through it all, Philly artists continue to set new trends above and beyond the norm. Chief Kamachi and the JuJu Mob are no exception to this rule, as they are poised and ready to take the Philly torch and run with it.
While each member of hip-hop’s JuJu Mob has accumulated his own fair share of accolades; you will remember Chief Kamachi from his 2004 solo-debut, Cult Status, Reef is one of the nation's top battle rap emcees and won the 2004 Rocksteady competition and Charon Don is one of Pittsburgh's top producers) they joined forces to form Juju Mob.
Being one of the hardest working MC’s to emerge from the late 90’s Indy explosion, Kamachi appeared on over sixteen 12’s; ranging from Jedi Mind Tricks, 7L & Esoteric, Last Emperor, Bahamadia, Baby Blak and many others. However, it was not until the 2004 release of his chart topping single with Gang Starr’s Guru, “The Best,” and his critically acclaimed debut that Kamachi begin to make his presence felt throughout the industry. Kamachi and Reef are also members of the Army of the Pharaohs, which also includes Jedi Mind Tricks, Outerspace and 7L & Esoteric; and collectively they will also be releasing an LP this summer.
JuJu Mob’s debut, Black Candles, will be released on 5-17-05 and features production from Charon Don and High & Mighty’s DJ Mighty Mi.
