Power U Youth and the Black Mangrove co-host an informative movie screening and presentation about the Prison Industrial Complex, its impact on youth of color in Miami, and the local campaign to stop the schoolhouse-to-jail-house pipeline.

On July 18th we will be showing the short film "Books Not Bars" produced by the Ella Baker Center. This video shows how the Prison Industrial Complex has been developed into a major business in the US, with astronomical incarceration rates. People of Color and youth are being funneled into this system as a way of warehousing them for both social control and for profit by the companies that own, run, service and hire labor out of the prisons. Ending the prison industrial complex is part of the most important civil rights battles of our time.

Power U youth are organizing here in Miami to end Juvenile Incarceration, starting with decreasing the numbers of suspensions and arrests in our schools. Jails and prisons are no place for young people and do not solve the issues in our communities. Youth of color are being targeted by disinvestment in the schools and in social services, lack of low-income quality housing and the extreme over-policing of the communities and schools in which we live and learn. We know that there is a better way of solving these issues by addressing needs, instead of locking up people and we are fighting for it.
