Rosa Parks Arrested in 1955

The family of Rosa Parks, who is currently suffering from dementia according to her doctor, has issued a statement saying they do not support the law suit issued in her name against the Grammy winning hip hop duo OutKast (who used her name for the title of their 1998 song from the album, Aquemini). Parks, who now resides in Detroit, holds an honored place in American history after being arrested in 1955 for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, AL bus. The arrest started a 381-day boycott of the bus system and led to court rulings desegregating public transportation throughout America. The Parks family issued the following statement, "We believe our aunt would appreciate the fact that (Outkast's) artistic gesture was designed to keep her legacy alive and fresh in the mind of this generation and generations to come....These lawsuits are only about money and they [Park's attorney Gregory Reed and her caregiver Elaine Steele] are trying to acquire it from OutKast." The five-year-old lawsuit will finally go to trial on Jan 10.
